Tomasz Drewicz – „TIE BREAK”
(sculptural installation – own technique)
2024
The presented multi-element multimedia installation refers to the issue of the clash of opposing forces as well as reducing different factors to a common denominator and ultimately to the need to maintain balance. It was entitled „Tie-break”, which means the last, decisive game in a tennis match, or a set in a volleyball match, which has not yet been decided.

In the proposed project I focus on the analysis of the concept of a tie, of course starting from the area of sports, in order to finally consider this issue also on a broader basis – personal, social, political and ultimately even military. Both the title and the form of the work raise issues related to the concept of Impasse; remaining in constant tension and readiness for action – reaching limit states and ways of crossing them. It is therefore equally strongly connected with the phenomenon of Transformation resulting from the observed Event.

Draw and Transformation can be related in different ways depending on the context. A draw can affect the process of transformation or be the result of certain changes, and transformation can strive to achieve a new equilibrium or affect a temporary draw in a process. Draw, Truce or Impasse can also, in a certain situation, become a catalyst for further transformations.
A temporary halt or achievement of equilibrium can lead to deeper reflection, searching for new solutions or making unconventional decisions. Shifting tensions is important to me, because the temporary nature of a tie or truce means that the conflict, however understood, may be temporarily suspended, although it will certainly not be permanently ended…

„TIE-BREAK is a time when balance reaches its critical point. Both sides are on the edge, and any decision can tip the scales. At this point, everything is suspended, which means that tension reaches its zenith and the event is already inevitable. The previous harmony is disrupted, and new possibilities are just beginning to take shape. It can be compared to a situation when different forces have to face each other, searching for a new order. It is in such moments that we can see all the complex relationships between individual elements and the groups they create, realizing that movement and change are necessary to find a new balance.”
