BREAK POINT

Tomasz Drewicz – „BREAK POINT”

The work focuses on analyzing the concept of a draw, deriving it from the field of sports and then introducing it into a broader context (social or political). The title refers to the rules of tennis, meaning a situation in which the player receiving the game needs one winning action to break it, i.e. win the game on the opponent’s serve. The term is also used in the programming community as a place where the execution of a program is deliberately paused in order to analyze its performance.

Both the title and the form of the work raise issues related to the situation of impasse; remaining in constant tension and readiness for action, reaching limit states and ways of crossing them.

A tie can affect the transformation process or be the result of some change, and the transformation can strive to achieve a new equilibrium or affect a temporary tie in a process. A tie, draw, truce, or stalemate can also become a catalyst for further change in some situations.

„BREAK POINT is the energy whose potential has a chance to break the balance in favor of one of the parties. It can destroy the previous order and introduce new solutions, initiating changes that give a new quality to the whole situation. The previous structure can be deformed and the forces that have been marginalized so far can speak up and introduce their perspectives to the dominant discourse. This accumulated energy reminds us that balance is a transitional state, and key changes can come at the most unexpected moments, in which a surprising event of ideas can restore harmony, also drawing attention to the fact that however understood, balance is in reality fluid and changeable.”
